Entering through the doors of the Holland armory and seeing all different kinds of artwork, the faces of the community all amazed; full of joy and eager. Walking from place to place, seeing different artworks that gives you the chills through your spine. One that caught my eye was the few words from a seventh grader that her message was written in Spanish. From reading the words in Spanish just caught my breath and i understood it, what she wrote was true. There was another one that caught my eye was the two paintings of the two sides of the paper cranes. one painting was the beauties in america, there was so many good qualities, for example, Diversity, Family, Education, friends, and many more. The second painting was the "harsh" things in america, it was shown, Discrimination, Racism, Deportations, division between cultures, and many more. I knew I wasn't the only one who was amazed by these artworks. Many were in deep in thought when looking in artworks, they took their time in thinking and finding connections through the artwork. The community was amazed with different artworks from different schools from different grades. In regards, of the most amazing artworks in the art exhibit, my project reflected a child's bedroom with two different cultures but they aren't divided but combined in to show that people can be united no more the different cultures. We all need work on being able to respect our differences and we still are trying, but lets not let fear control temporary feelings affect permanent decisions.
The Beauty of the World Lies in the Diversity of its People - Unknown
This project, that is being represented does not show the division between two cultures. In today’s society people can emphasize the differences between cultures. And (I) didn’t want this project to be seen as a division or separation of cultures. However this project shows a bedroom of a girl which she has two cultures, Mexican and american. Which she lives with both cultures in her household. This don't show the division between cultures but to blend cultures to combine ideas, recreational activity. A simple life that has strengths from both cultures. In the bedroom the colors shows the emotions of joy. This simple girl food from both cultures (pizza, hot dog, tacos). The sports from both (football, softball, and soccer). The music, the trumpet stands for the different stages of music, different eras in america’s music. And as for the guitar most of the mexico music is based on bands “corridos” and “mariachi.” The big gown which is part Mexican culture but more like tradition, the Quinceanera dress is a way to show the next stage of a girl heading to adulthood well to a women.
This girl’s bedroom, the design is an idea from my personal life, I’m a first generation of my family, both of my parents are Mexican. The first child to learn the american language, English, to discover the american dream. Even though my household is where my Mexican culture is expressed. Even though my parents are from mexico and I live here, i live both cultures, blending those cultures. The american culture is based on my surroundings in schools, public places, which this is also another part of my culture. It has been seen that people with different cultures are being expressed different. Being judgmental when they haven’t discovered the beauty of their culture or even the personality of the person. ALL CULTURES ARE UNIQUE AND BEAUTIFUL . A more specific example of the blends of cultures is school, At West Ottawa High School, I have classmates that are all over the world. When there are class discussions their cultures are expressed, listening to different stories, different recreational activities, different foods. In simpler form, their culture is enhanced. We all learn something new everyday, traveling the world while learning different cultures. It is even said that learning cultures help develop ideas / solutions. It’s just amazing to meet people from different places around the world. Since from a little girl the Mexican culture was shown to me, I was part of the culture. Being different in elementary school wasn’t a big deal. But the problem was the lack of diversity expressed.
In conclusion, Diversity is a beautiful thing. Every human being is different, unique, and special. Even for as cultures too! As told by the saying, don’t judge a book by its cover. Races, cultures, ethnicity, they’re all different but at the end we are all humans. Humans make mistakes. Don’t let fear control your conscience which make mistakes that ruin their dignity just it was shown in the book, When The Emperor Was Divine. A thing to remember is Kindness, yes this word is all over the place but it's not fully expressed all over the place. Being kind, giving people good advice, holding the door for someone, talk with someone new, being respectful to one another. The point is being kind to one another no matters the differences or from where they come from.
The Raion Taiko Japanese drumming ensemble, The Big Read Music event took place in Dimnent Chapel at 7 pm Friday, November 3. The reason I attended to this event, was because of the curiosity of the music and how the Japanese culture is discovered in music. In the book of "When The Emperor Was Divine" it never happened to talk about the culture in music or even their food diet as for the egg and fish. In addition, it never mention of how the instruments were made. Which was interesting to know that their instruments were made from the single tree trunk to make a single Taiko drum. Before the music event, entering through the chapel you have a sense of eager, hearing the entrance music of the drums. People entering and looking for their seats as if they wouldn't be able to find a seat. As the introduction speech was said, the lights seem to focus more on the drums and the performers, who are going to play the drums. Many of the performances, the drum beats, makes your heart to pound harder or louder. Which Feeling the beat going through everywhere making it more exciting. The sound of the beat and the rhythm travels everywhere and bounces off the walls. Each song had their own tempo, tone, beat, rhythm and how it's synchronized with other drums. Each song that is being played, every bang of the drum makes you to seem to travel a new world. Even making you feel a different sense as if making you more stronger or more bolder.
This event gives me an idea of the Japanese culture connecting to "When The Emperor Was Divine," each culture has its own charm, their own joy. Which as in seen in the Japanese drumming the performers was playing with joy, seen through their smile and movement . The Japanese drumming also is played during special events in the Japanese culture. The music Taiko can even represent nature or the weather. For example depending using which kind of instruments (bamboo flute, Japanese guitar the shamisen, the different sizes of the drums) and the rhythm.
This event and the big read, "When The Emperor Was Divine" affected me to understand the experience of the Japanese that hasn't been talked in our everyday topics. All cultures are beautiful and unique. Just because someone's native country has done something terrible does not define all it's people. EVERYONE IS UNIQUE.
Part A: today we discussed more in depth about the idea. And it's settle where and when we will take the photos
Part B: as a producer I had to make sure everyone had to do their part for this goal. And that I have to make sure, we'll meet at location that we'll take the picture and bring materials,
Part A: Our group discussed of many ideas that we could do, which was what the book represented it's theme and how we could make it to art (photography).
Part B: As the job for a producer (the job which I'm placed) To make these ideas possible. I have to find the location for where the pictures would be taken. And get the objects if needed. I'll need to research any traditions that I can find symbolism.
To summarize, In the late 1942 of the month of November, Min Tanaka (the character of this story) was taken to the "concentration camp" which was really a internment camps for all Japanese, due to the Government they were suspicious of the Japanese that was living in America that will pose threat to the U.S. Once again. Since the pearl attack. Anyways, Min Tanaka was in south Carolina. His family and him had to to leave to the camps and leave everything behind even his dog, Mickey. In addition he was very sad of leaving his dog. Pets weren't allowed in the camps. That was his "depression." Months later, he saw snow for the first time, his friends were surprised too. Since their leftovers of construction wood, it was used as sleds. These sleds were the fun for these children including Min Tanaka. It was weird and rare when one of the guards from the camps play/ sled with the children. But there problems that only the adults seen, the controversy of placing all Japanese in one "city" which was unfair. In these camps they lacked basic needs for example the basic medicines. The descriptions of the camp was like desert and two fences. Which the children sled out of boundary and received a warning to not go out of boundary. Min realized the warning was toward about them and not the sleds. The title of this podcast was "Slip Slidin' away."
